I’m Jake Gyllenhaal’s Trainer – How I Helped Him Get a Six Pack

Jake Gyllenhaal was absolutely punished for this year’s Road House remake, reportedly dropping to 5% body fat for the role originally played by Patrick Swayze.

His six-pack spoke for itself, but his trainer, Jason Walsh, tells the Post that Jake faced a particular hurdle when it came to his diet — so he had to get creative.

“Working with actors to get ready for roles is a unique challenge and requires full commitment — mind and body — to achieve the physicality they’re looking to achieve,” said Walsh, who also worked with Pedro. Pascal, Matt Damon, Miles Teller, Alison Brie and Bradley Cooper.

“Each client is completely unique in terms of the approach we apply and the time frame we’re up against.”

He previously broke down Jake’s Road House workout for men’s health, highlighting the use of mobility drills, a Proteus Motion machine, isometrics, heavy sled work, safety band squats, forearm drills, and bag drills offset, floor press, chain push, suspension trainer push-pull, reps-push-pull, and climber’s sprints.

But the super-intense muscle-building workouts could only do so much if the 43-year-old star wasn’t getting enough protein — and he needed a lot of it.

“We had him on an intense regimen that required a drastic increase in protein that was nearly impossible to hit with his regular diet,” Walsh said.

For most people, that would mean choosing any of the endless options of whey protein powders—but whey gave Jake digestive issues, and he wasn’t crazy about how they went either.

Whey, in particular, can cause problems for people who are lactose intolerant, which is about 65% of the population.

“Jake had a negative reaction to the taste and textures of protein supplements on the market (which tend to over-compensate for sweetener to mask the taste of insoluble protein sources), which was hindering his progress as he required regular supplements ,” Walsh explained.

These problems with protein were a catalyst for the trainer to create his plant-based protein powder, RISE311, “which Jake quickly adopted in the early days and was shocked at how tasty, smooth and easy to he was drunk”.

It’s made with a blend of pea protein and barley rice protein, plus stevia, leucine and sunflower lecithin, among other ingredients.

According to Walsh, the actor would have it as a post-workout treat and loved the taste. Ultimately, though, it was because of Jake and his dedication.

“You can have a great coach, a great program, a great team — none of that matters if you don’t have the right person to do it all,” Walsh told Men’s Health. “Jake did the job. He earned it.”

While Jake got the star treatment with Walsh’s protein powder creation, it was made available for purchase to the masses earlier this year starting at $54.95 a bag.

“In a perfect world, the average person would get all of their daily protein from their diet, but most people need a supplement,” Walsh said. “Protein plays a vital role not only in building muscle, but for overall health. It supports immune function, metabolism, skin health and even satiety, making it essential for energy conservation and recovery.”

Walsh’s advice? Shoot for 30 grams per day with enough leucine to ensure “optimal muscle protein synthesis and utilization.”
